A Swedish semla, also known as the Fat Tuesday bun, is a soft wheat pastry filled with almond paste and topped with lightly whipped cream. This traditional treat has been enjoyed in Sweden since the 16th century and was originally eaten before the fasting period leading up to Easter. Over time, the semla evolved from a simple bread roll in warm milk to the rich and indulgent pastry people love today.
Today, semlas start appearing in bakeries and cafés early in the year, and many Swedes look forward to this seasonal tradition with great anticipation. Although the classic version is the most beloved, some cafés now offer creative variations, while still honoring the traditional flavors that make the semla special. It remains one of Sweden’s most iconic pastries and a beloved part of the winter season.
