Lingonberries, along with their shrubs, grow throughout Sweden from north to south. These small, red berries ripen in August and September and are commonly used to make jams, jellies, syrups, and other flavorful preserves.
The tradition of foraging is supported by Sweden’s allemansrätten, or right of public access, which allows everyone to explore the outdoors freely. This includes the right to pick wild mushrooms, herbs, and berries while respecting nature and other people’s property. Lingonberries are not only a staple in Swedish cuisine but also a symbol of the country’s connection to its natural landscapes.
