Reindeer herding is an important part of life in Sápmi, the traditional homeland of the Sami people. Spread across northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and parts of Russia, this region has a long history shaped by the movement of reindeer and the people who care for them. The relationship between the Sami and their reindeer is deeply rooted in tradition, respect and knowledge of the northern landscape.
Today, the Sami remain one of the world’s smallest Indigenous communities, with an estimated 70 000 people living throughout Sápmi. In Sweden, around 20 000 Sami continue to preserve their cultural identity through language, crafts, festivals and traditional practices such as herding. Their flag and their own parliament symbolize the strength and continuation of their heritage.
Visitors to northern Sweden have the opportunity to learn more about reindeer herding through guided cultural experiences. These encounters offer insight into everyday life, seasonal work, and the deep connection the Sami have with the land. It is a meaningful way to understand the traditions that have shaped this northern region for centuries.
