The Sami people, Sweden’s indigenous population, have a long tradition of living off the land through hunting, fishing, and reindeer herding. Their diet depended heavily on reindeer, with milk providing nourishment during the summer months and meat sustaining them through the winter. In this culture, where wasting any part of an animal was avoided, blood pancakes were created as a nutritious and practical way to make full use of the reindeer’s resources.
These pancakes, made from reindeer blood, flour, and spices, reflect the Sami’s ingenuity and deep connection to nature. They continue to be a symbol of Sami culinary heritage and are still enjoyed today as part of cultural events and traditional meals.
