Horseback riding, or equestrianism, is one of Sweden’s most popular sports, especially among young people aged 7 to 25. Around half a million Swedes ride horses, whether competitively or for leisure, and the Swedish Equestrian Federation counts over 150 000 members, the majority of whom are women. Riding provides an opportunity to connect with nature, improve fitness, and enjoy a timeless outdoor activity.
Sweden’s unique Allemansrätten, or Right of Public Access, encourages people to explore nature freely. However, there are some limitations for horseback riders. Riding on someone’s farmland without permission is not allowed, as it can harm crops and soil. It is always important to seek consent from landowners before riding across private property.
Horseback riding in Sweden offers the perfect combination of sport, adventure, and immersion in the countryside. Trails through forests, meadows, and scenic landscapes allow riders to experience the beauty of Sweden while respecting both nature and private land.
