Sweden’s National Day is celebrated on June 6, as a day to honor Swedish culture, innovation, history, identity and independence.
Why Sweden celebrates its national day on June 6?
This day commemorates two Swedish historical milestones.
1) 1523 June 6 – Gustav Vasa was elected as the King of Sweden and laying the foundation as an independent state while leaving the Kalmar union with Denmark and Norway.
2) 1809 June 6 – Sweden adopted a new constitution which introduced separation of powers between the parliament and the king.
By 1916 June 6, Sweden celebrated its ”Swedish Flag Day” after acquiring its own flag. However, by 1983 June 6 Sweden started to celebrate its national day officially. And from 2005 it declared as a public holiday.
How do Swedes celebrate national day today?
With the participation of the King and Queen of Sweden the official National day ceremony is held at open air museum, Skansen, Stockholm. On this day all the municipalities around the Sweden organise celebrations such as Swedish flag-raising ceremonies, traditional costumes presentation, musical performances and also ceremonies for welcoming new Swedish citizens.
